HISTORY
The founding fathers |
In the year 1917 the register Max Reinhardt wrote a memorandum, published by the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal, who in 1919 founded a program of the Festival. Max Reinhardt had started his career at today’s Landestheater. The founding fathers of the Festival are Richard Strauss, Max Reinhardt and Hugo von Hofmannsthal. |
The Festival during the Nazi era |
When the National Socialist troops entered in Salzburg on the 12 th of March 1938 the ”Anschluss” of Austria to Germany had taken place. The Nazi ideology influenced the Festival, too.
Many actors were forbiden to appear on stage. Some of the works of the Festival’s founding father, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, were banned, starting with his “Jedermann” (but not Strauss operas with libretto by Hofmannsthal). The spectacular “Faust” in the Felsenreitschule by Reinhardt was replaced by an Egmont.
The propaganda ministry of Berlin wanted ”German art” to dominate the repertoire. Furthermore, foreign spectators were no longer welcome in Salzburg. Thousands of Germans were taken to the Festival, above all poor workers, who received the tickets from the government under the sign of the program “Force by joy”. The Nazis used the city as an enormous propaganda instrument and put up thousands of swastika flags. At the end in 1943, the name “Festspiele” was transformed by the propaganda ministry to “Salzburger Theater- und Musiksommer” (Summer of Salzburg’s theatre and music).
In 1946 life returned to normality. The members of the Wiener Staatsoper and of the Vienna Philharmonic finally returned to the Festival. |
Herbert von Karajan – a legend |
Herbert von Karajan, another legend in the story of the Festival, opened the new Grosses Festspielhaus on the 26 July 1960 with the performance Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss. A new era had begun.
The most famous operas of the XIX century, with the best singers had been: Il Trovatore (1962), Otello (1970), Don Carlo (1975), Aida (1979), Falstaff (1981), Macbeth (1984) and Maskenball (1989) were performed, as well as Carmen by Bizet (1966, 1985), Boris Godunow by Mussorgsky (1965) and Hoffmanns Erzaehlungen by Offenbach (1980).
The Mortier era |
Gerard Mortier wanted to make up for the stagnancy of the previous years. The “New Salzburg”, he proclaimed, followed the idea of a vaster and more modern repertoire, of new esthetic ideas, also provocative ones, and of a different and younger audience. The annual number of new productions increased considerably and the various periods of performances were united by a motto. |
